Topic: Inspiration or Fool?
Being an avid outdoors-man, reading this passage is not only concerning but frustrating. Chris McCandless is going out into the snow packed Alaskan Wilderness very ill prepared, and Krakauer makes that very apparent. At the end of the chapter, the man who drops McCandless off says he was going to tip off the Rangers but decided not too, because any normal person would've turned around after realizing how utterly unprepared they are. Doing what Chris did was undoubtedly a fool's errand, and it cost him his life. Chris' gun-ho attitude was that of what Gallien describes of a typical person "from the outside" in the first chapter. He was foolhardy and had no idea what he was getting himself into. I mean for cry sake the man only had a .22 caliber rifle (which is practically a pellet gun) along with a 10 pound bag of rice and he expected to survive in the Alaskan wilderness? Chris McCandless was without a doubt, a fool.

"Alex admitted that the only food in his pack was a ten pound bag of rice. His gear seemed exceedingly minimal for the harsh conditions of the interior..." (Krakauer 5).
